Leading up to Groundhog Day…

I love reading Gretchen Groundhog, It’s Your Day! to my kindergarten class before we take our vote.  We also watch clips on United Streaming/ Discovery Education about the history of Groundhog Day.  Next, I give each student a voting slip.  The students fill out the secret ballots.  Then, we use the graph included to show our results.    Last, I tell the children to watch the news in the morning of Groundhog Day so that they can report the news when they get to school.

During Writing Workshop, I have my students complete the writing prompt that goes along with the bulletin board craft.  They complete the slide3prompt, “On Groundhog Day,…” and they finish the sentence starter with their prediction.  For example, they may write “On Groundhog Day, the groundhog will (or will not) see his shadow.”  I collect and save these prompts to attach to the craft portion which they make on the actual day of the holiday.

On Groundhog Day…

On the morning of Groundhog Day, I ask the children if they know the results.  We look back at our graph and decide whether our predictors were accurate.  I hang the appropriate sign (also included in the bundle) in the classroom to show the results.  It will either read “Six more weeks of winter,” or “It will be an early spring!”  I am surely hoping for an early spring!

We then complete the Groundhog Day Bulletin Board Craft and attach the writing at the end.  We also complete the Groundhog Day adjective page slide2later in the school day!

Teacher Tips for prepping and assembling are included in the packet as well!

Happy Groundhog Day!

“The summer is going by so slow,” said no teacher EVER!

Where did the summer go?  As much as we teachers love our jobs, the summer break never seems quite long enough!  I have only two weeks left to accomplish everything on my summer to-do list which included finishing my youngest daughter’s first year scrapbook (she’s 6), getting all of our pictures printed and placed in albums, and organizing all of my cupboards and closets.  Oh well, there’s always next summer!

What I did accomplish was getting to spend time with my two girls and my wonderful husband! Our family traveled to Hilton Head, South Carolina.  We rented bikes and rode around the island all week.  It was my first time there.  We’ve always gone to Myrtle Beach in the past.  Hilton Head was a nice change.  It was so relaxing and just beautiful!  We will definitely go back!  My husband and I were lucky enough to take a second mini-vacation to Keystone, Colorado for a wedding.  Colorado was absolutely breathtaking.  Every picture we took looked like a postcard.  If you haven’t been there, I would highly recommend it!hh3hh1

My daughters on Take Your Child to Work Day – future teachers!

Now, it’s almost back to reality!  Sigh.  At the end of last school year, I swore to myself that I was NOT going to go into school over the summer.  However, my little girls, future teachers in the making, have been begging me to go in one day so that they can “help”me.  So, how can I say no to these little sweeties?!  Since I left my room pretty organized, I am thinking I will take full advantage of the copier and prep all of my Back to School BASICS that I use during the first month of kindergarten.  In my next blog post, I will share with you everything I print off for the start of Kindergarten!

However many days you have left until you start back, ENJOY EVERY MINUTE!  You’ve earned it!
